Erin Murphy
Director of Residencies and Exhibitions of Artpace
It’s #WomanWednesday, y’all! 👏🏻 Meet Erin Murphy, Director of Residencies and Exhibitions at @artpace 👩🎨 Her focus this year is to highlight pioneering female artists through exhibitions that “amplify global voices of a bold & powerful female-identifying artistic community.”
Originally from Houston, Erin received her masters in Art History from UNT & has worked in galleries across Texas including the Dallas Museum of Art, The Briscoe, & more before coming to Artpace.
Erin manages Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residency Program, bringing in a different group of 3 artists 3 sessions a year to live & work in SA. Each round includes 1 artist from Texas, 1 from the U.S., & 1 international. Every cohort is chosen by a different guest curator. The program was founded in 1995, by another incredible SA Woman, Linda Pace 🙌🏼 Her contributions & legacy continue to be a driving force in the arts community here in SA (@rubycity ).
When organizing the current Exhibit, “Visibilities: Intrepid Women of Artpace,” Erin focused on women & their contributions to art and society 🙋🏻♀️ The year 2020 was a major inspiration for this focus as it is Artpace’s 25th birthday, the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S., & an election year. •
The works in the current exhibition address, “identity, femaleness, gender, or feminism, in a moment when decades after the nascent stages of the Women’s Movement, the presentation of these concepts is still relevant, & perhaps even more pressing.”
Erin’s advice for other women, no matter what their stage in life, is “Never be afraid to reach out to someone.” 👏🏻 It can be intimidating, but it’s important. Erin says she wouldn’t be where she is today without her mentors & she is happy to pay it forward.
Check out Artpace’s current exhibit on display until April 26th! 💕After that, their next two exhibitions will also focus on pioneering female artists!
